Register for August Classes at IAC
Due to popular demand, the Industrial Arts Center in Gulfport has added two more weeks to its Creative Summer for Kids. One more Kids Glass Week has been scheduled for August 9-13, from 9 a.m. until noon, followed the next week by a new offering, Multi-Media Week, August 16-20, from 2-5 p.m.
Glass Week activities will include blown glass ornaments, glass casting from a clay relief sculpture, glass fusing, glass paperweights, and a painted glass block. Multi-Media Week activities will include mosaic, clay hand building, painting on canvas, and creating art with food.
The IAC’s all day glass blowing classes -- Fun with Hot Glass and More Fun With Hot Glass -- are growing in popularity and will continue in August. Fun with Hot Glass, the IAC’s next accelerated beginner glass blowing class, is scheduled for Sunday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More Fun With Hot Glass, scheduled for Sunday, August 22, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., takes the basic glass blowing instruction to the next level.
Also new at the unique non-profit teaching facility is a Mixed Media Clay sculpture/Mosaic classes taught by world class sculptor Crea Egan. Classes are scheduled to begin August 1.

Galleries to Host Wine Tasting to Benefit CASA
The Sebastian Thomas Gallery, The Donna Gordon Gallery & Studio, MQC Gallery and Gallerias Bohemia, four of the galleries located in the 600 Block of Central Avenue in St. Petersburg are hosting a Progressive Wine Tasting to benefit Casa, the house that provides safe refuge from domestic violence. Each gallery will present a specific varietal, and guests will spend approximately 30 minutes tasting that varietal, and learning about the grape, the growing region and the winery. At the end of the 30 minutes they will progress to the next gallery, where they will be presented with the next varietal.

Annual Gecko Ball Returns
GULFPORT-Gulfport’s annual Gecko Ball returns on Saturday, August 28. “Geckos in Wonderland” is the light-hearted theme of this year’s festivities. The Ball will be held at the Peninsula Inn & Spa, 2937 Beach Boulevard. The party starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. The Gecko Ball is an annual event leading up to the 10th annual Gecko Fest, Gulfport’s largest street festival of the year on Saturday, September 4.
“Geckos in Wonderland” will be a celebration befitting Gulfport’s quirky, funky, artistic nature. Larger than life décor will evoke Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. Food for the occasion will conjure elements of the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Live music for dancing and entertainment will keep party-goers on their feet. Wonderland-related characters and activities will offer surprises throughout the evening. Silent auctions will also be held during the Ball, featuring gift certificates and merchandise from local businesses and artists. A portion of proceeds from the Ball and Gecko Fest will benefit the City of Gulfport’s Centennial Celebration to be held in October.
Tickets for “Geckos in Wonderland” are $25 each and are available in advance at The Outpost, 3007 Beach Boulevard. and Domain Home Accessories, 3129 Beach Boulevard.
The third annual Gecko Fest Pub Crawl is another event in the line-up of festivities leading to Gecko Fest. The Pub Crawl will be held on Saturday, August 7. Watch for more details about this and all things Gecko in Gulfport as they develop.

Pre-Register for Tot-Time Program
Ongoing pre-registrations are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 Tot Time Program. The Tot Time Program is a pre-school, hands-on program for children ages 3-5. The program aims to make learning fun for children and helps prepare them for Kindergarten. Two, three and five-day monthly options are available. Non-refundable annual registration fee is $15 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Program hours are from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Hours for pre-registration are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Be the Voice for Abused Children
Make a life long difference for an abused and neglected child. A Guardian ad Litem works with a professional staff and an attorney to ensure that a child has a safe, caring and stable environment.
The next training will be August 3 to September 1 at the Pinellas Criminal Justice Center, 14250 49 Street N. in Clearwater. Hundreds of volunteer Guardians ad Litem are urgently needed to be a child’s voice in court and the child welfare system. The average time needed is six to ten hours a month.

Learn about Nesting Sea Turtles
Adults and families are welcome to a free presentation to learn about nesting sea turtles and their survival on Wednesday, August 11 at 7 p.m. at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort, 5500 Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach. Visit nesting beach habitat with marine educator Joe Malo from Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The evening begins with an insightful presentation about their life histories, habitats, and conservation as well as a video of sea turtles laying eggs and some hatchlings. Following the presentation you will visit the beach habitats and learn more. Find out how you can help these fascinating creatures and help preserve their disappearing nesting habitat.

Patrick Henry talks about his current exhibit, “Let’s Face It”, a series of sculpturally altered ceramic platters and plates that you would never put on the dining room table. Mariners Asked to Use Caution
ST. PETE BEACH- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting dredging operations by the Blind Pass and Johns Pass vicinities. Its part of the beach renourishment and erosion control. The work is planned for July 19 through December 16.
Mariners should operate vessels with caution in the area due to potential for floating debris, increased traffic due to dredging operations, floating pipeline and large equipment working in and along the navigation channels. Mariners can monitor channels 13/16 or call (904) 232-2258 for more information.

Help Improve USCG Building in Gulfport
Donations are needed for improvements to the USCG Auxiliary Building in Gulfport. Gulfport Marine Training & Rescue Group (GUMTARG) established in 1962, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. Unlike most non-profit corporations that are only 50%, GUMTARG is 100% non-profit and has no paid employees or directors.
GUMTARG financially supports the Gulfport Auxiliary 7-16 building solely. Every penny of all donations are tax deductible and will go toward building improvements. They accept car, boat, and cash donations. GUMTARG has kept the Gulfport auxiliary building afloat since 1962. New or gently used clothes, uniforms and shoes can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at Clothes To Kids two convenient locations, in Clearwater at 1059 N. Hercules Ave. and their new store in St. Pete at 3251 Third Avenue N. Cash donations are always needed to purchase clothing in short supply and new underwear. Adult and youth volunteers are always needed especially in the new St. Pete store.

The 3rd Annual Tangerine Blues Fest will take place on Saturday, September 25 from 4-10 p.m. along the Tangerine Greenway (located at 18th Ave. S. between 49th St. S. and 54th St. S. in Gulfport) The 49th Street South Business Association has a great lineup of entertainers this year, including the Joel Sanders Band, Julie Black, Deacon Blues Band and Damon Fowler Group. Emergency Energy Assistance for Seniors
Pinellas County Health and Human Services Department provides emergency energy assistance of up to $600 to senior citizens unable to pay their power bills.
Funds from the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco/Pinellas Inc. can help residents 60 and older in danger of having their power disconnected during the designated cooling and heating seasons when demand and bills are higher than normal. Eligible seniors must have a crisis with a delinquent notice from the utility company or a notice that power has been shut off to be considered for help. They may also qualify to receive repairs to a cooling unit or a voucher for fans, heaters and blankets.
Eligible seniors can receive help up to twice a year during each high-demand season. Health and Human Services staff members screen applicants to determine if they meet income limits. The income limit is 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guideline. For a household of one, the limit is $16,245 a year. For two people, the income limit is $21,855 (add $5,610 for each additional member of family units with more than eight members.)

Oktoberfest Seeks Vendors
If you are a food vendor, craft vendor or local eatery interested in participating in Most Holy Name’s Fall Festival, send your contact information to nolelover1@aol.com or fax to

Food vendors will be stationed outdoors and the Arts and Crafts Fair will be held inside the Maria Center throughout the 4-day festival. Space is limited both outside and inside and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Reservation forms are also available in the rectory office of Most Holy Name Church at 5800 15 Avenue S. in Gulfport. The “Oktoberfest” fall festival has been an annual event in Gulfport for over 30 years and will be held October 7 through October 10. This is a fun weekend including rides, games, food, dancing and entertainment.

Care Givers Support Groups
Do you find yourself “caring” for the health concerns of another? If so, consider coming to one of Pasadena Community Church’s Care Giver Support Groups in the Life Enrichment Center at 227 70 Street S. One group meets on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and the other meets on Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Both groups are open to the public and provide a confidential setting for those attending to share with others who are in like situations their experiences, joys and concerns of “care giving”. The person may be a relative or just a good friend. It is not necessary that the individual reside in the same house with you or even the same state.

Recession Buster for Seniors
Seniors in Service provides a tax-free income of up to $425 per month to income-qualified volunteers who serve as Foster Grandparents. This income does not affect eligibility for food stamps, housing, Medicaid or any other assistance. Volunteers must be 55 years old or older and serve for 15 - 40 hours per week.
Foster Grandparents serve in public school classrooms, Head Start centers and after-school programs. They spend their time one-on-one or in small groups with at-risk children.

Volunteers Needed for Soup Kitchen
The Salvation Army of St. Petersburg is seeking volunteers to staff its community soup kitchen on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Volunteers will assist staff in serving meals to the clients who come to the soup kitchen each day for the noon and evening meals. They will be involved in serving, and clearing tables as clients arrive and depart during the meal hours.
