The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday May 11th, featuring the film, MOONLIGHT (2016). This is a free gathering to experience a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.
Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
This year’s Oscar-winner for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay comes to the LGBTQ Film Series! An independent film widely lauded by critics, MOONLIGHT was called “Fiercely moving. A flat-out masterpiece” by Rolling Stone. A gay African-American boy grows into manhood under the influence of his family and neighborhood in urban Miami. In the first segment, ten-year-old Chiron is bullied by other kids while his mother falls into drug abuse. He finds kindness and mentorship with a local drug dealer and his girlfriend. In the next segment, teenaged Chiron explores his sexuality with his close friend. In the final segment, Chiron follows in the footsteps of his mentor and reconnects with others from his past. MOONLIGHT is written and directed by Floridian Barry Jenkins and stars Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monae, Naomie Harris, Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, Alex Hibbert, Andre Holland, Shariff Earp, Duan Sanderson, and Jaden Piner. It is based on the play, “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.” Rated R.
Save the date, Thursday June 8th, for the Pride Month installment of the LGBTQ Film Series, featuring the 1983 film LIANNA. A classic film in the lesbian genre, LIANNA stars Linda Griffiths as a wife and mother whose life evolves after an affair with a female college professor. John Sayles directed the groundbreaking film. As part of our slate of LGBTQ Pride Month events, our film this evening will include special guest speaker, Rob McCabe. Rob is a local poet, screenplay writer, and “armchair film historian” who will provide a brief talk and introduction to the film.
HURRICANE BIANCA is scheduled for the Film Series on July 13th, and CLOSET MONSTER is scheduled on August 10th. Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
