Meet Ceramic Artist Laurie Landry
May 16, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pmFREE
Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host a reception to feature ceramic artist Laurie Landry and her work. This installment of Domain’s monthly “Meet the Artists” events will take place on Saturday, May 16th, 6 until 10 p.m. at 3129 Beach Boulevard South in Gulfport.
Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered as well as live music by jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood.
Artist Laurie Landry was born near Minneapolis, where she spent most of her first 46 years of life. After living briefly in the mountains of Northwest Georgia, she relocated to St. Petersburg in 2013. Her lifetime fascination with art was noticeable when as a child she eschewed dolls and favored crayons, Etch-a-Sketch, Lite Brite and Spirograph.
She was in her thirties when she focused her creativity on clay, working and learning under the guidance of well-known artists. She has gone on to teach ceramics to school children and has exhibited her work and earned awards in numerous art galleries, shows and festivals, including local events such as Art Festival Beth-El and Florida CraftArt Festival.
Birds are a principle inspiration for Landry, as well as plants, shells, fish and other objects and creatures she has encountered in her gardens and treks through nature. The totem is a favored form consisting of stacked smaller pieces, each thrown, altered and painstakingly hand-carved. Each smaller piece on the stack conveys its own character and statement, while the combined totem creates another statement of its own, perhaps a remembrance of one image after another as seen on a journey.
Landry’s work also includes functional stoneware and porcelain pieces, including cups, bowls, vases and jars rendered with a hand-carved “sgraffito” technique. Domain Home Accessories & Gallery has only recently begun to show Landry’s work and is pleased to offer this opportunity for its customers to meet her and discover her work. She will offer additional pieces for one night only during the event.
Established in March 2001, Domain Home Accessories offers a variety of unique art, décor, lighting, jewelry, cards, home goods and more, earning a reputation as one of Gulfport’s most respected retailers. “& Gallery” opened in 2012 in the adjacent space and showcases the work of over 40 local and regional artists.
“Meet the Artists” events at “& Gallery” occur during Gulfport’s popular Third Saturday Art Walk. Artists and artisans line the sidewalks of scenic Beach Boulevard on Art Walk evenings. Independent shops and boutiques, live music venues, street performers, and Gulfport’s many popular restaurants are all part of the lively Art Walk scene. Parking in the waterfront village is free and convenient. Free trolleys are available for visitors parking in remote sites for transportation to and from the hub of Art Walk.
