Four smiling volunteers (wo)manning the table outside The Historic Peninsula Inn hand an attendee a poker card during Gulfport’s ninth annual Gecko Crawl Saturday, August 13. It was hard to tell who had a better time, the attendees or the volunteers. The four best friends, from left, Muzi Michaels, Jerryanne Hindman, Nanci Spadorcia and Margo Scannell, all of Gulfport, said they love working at the crawl together because it’s so much fun.
“I [volunteer] because I love the weirdness of Gulfport,” Hindman said. “You can do and be anything and be accepted.”
The event is one of several gecko-themed activities celebrated in Gulfport in late summer aimed at having fun and raising money for charity. Crawl participants paid $20 each to sample a free beverage and get a poker card in each of six local bars and restaurants; poker players competed for best poker hand, worst poker hand and a drawing open to all regardless of score. Next up in Gecko-Land: Gecko Ball 2016 on August 27 and Gecko Fest on September 3.
