Life Imitates Art at Grand Central Block Party

Rae Grand, an illustrator from Sarasota, works on an illustration of members of the Coastals band of Tampa performing at the Grandiversary block party of the 2400 block of Central Avenue on Saturday, January 28. Grand and the Coastals were among some 30 vendors and performers who entertained and sold their wares at the event, now in its third year. The indie/alternative band can be seen performing behind Grand, who said the mother of one of the members had commissioned  the portrait.

Sage Rhodes of St. Petersburg and her daughter Weetzie were among those at the block party of the 2400 block of Central Avenue on Saturday, January 28. Rhodes said they came to listen to the Dollyrots, a rock ‘n roll band from Los Angeles. “She likes to dance,” she said of Weetzie. “I play their songs for her. It will be nice for her to actually see them.”
