New Community Garden Coming to Gulfport

A brand new community garden is being planned for Gulfport affording residents of both Gulfport and St. Petersburg the opportunity to grow vegetables, annuals and other non-permanent plants in a plot of their own.
The garden is a grass roots endeavor being coordinated by a group of local gardening enthusiasts. It is supported by the City of Gulfport and the South 49th Street Business Association. It is intended to provide a sustainable, educational, and aesthetically appealing garden in the Gulfport community.
The garden is planned on Preston Avenue between 51st and 52nd Street South. Plots will be offered for $50 for a season, with two seasons a year (March-August and September-February)
Organizers hope that eventually the garden will offer educational courses for both youth and adults on topics ranging from organic gardening to xeriscaping. The focus will be on sustainable gardening.
The grass roots community group is currently seeking volunteers to help get the garden organized and marketed to the community. Plots may also be reserved at this time. More information is available by visiting www.so49.org.
Organizers will be holding an organizational meeting at a date that will be announced soon. A “soft” opening is planned for March 1 with a target date of April 1 for a more public grand opening.
