Author Vicki Covington at Pass Books/ Cat Island Coffeehouse
April 28, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Meet Vicki Covington, author of ONCE IN A BLUE MOON at Pass Books/Cat Island Coffeehouse. Vicki published 4 novels—one every two years—with Simon & Schuster. She has also published several stories in the New Yorker and written the “Meditations for Bad Girls” column for the Oxford American. Because of various family situations, Vicki’s muse fell silent and she did not write a word for 15 years. About 2 years ago, her muse returned and the result is ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
The novel is set in Birmingham, Alabama, during the 2008 Presidential election campaign. Abraham Kasir is the owner of several once-majestic Victorian homes that are now converted into apartments. Kind-hearted Mr. Kasir collects lost souls and offers them a place of solace where they can heal their inner wounds and find a way back to a better life. We follow four of his tenants as they join the Obama campaign and form a tight supportive community. As the novel progresses, we learn the back stories that explain how each of these characters arrived at this community. As the book unfolds, the characters find themselves and each other in a season when hope and change seem like real possibilities.
