At the western edge of St. Petersburg lies a Tocobaga Indian mound, and the Anderson family – of Anderson Lumber fame – has held onto the property and kept it largely wild. The Anderson family leads tours throughout the week and yes, you will see peacocks. The tour includes a nice bit of history about the Tocobaga – they’re the ancestors of the Seminole Tribe of Florida – and the mound, taking you through more than a millennia of history on the site. The 900′ long mound is 25′ high. The tour includes stories of the almost-humorous Narváez expedition that landed near or in the Tampa Bay area (no one really knows) and more recent tales of the area’s history, including speculation about illegal hooch and Walter Fuller. –Gabber staff
