Over 80 people were treated to a night of poetry by Florida’s Poet Laureate Peter Meinke at the annual Circle of Friends meeting at the Catherine A. Hickman Theater on February 11. The public event included poetry readings, discussion about the inspiration for each poem and a book signing. Meinke’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Poetry, among other journals. He recently published “The Elf Poem,” an illustrated children’s book with his wife, artist Jeanne Clark.
“We are delighted to have the honor of having Peter Meinke as our guest for our annual meeting. Peter is a very special man and what really struck me was that he is so very genuine,” said Phyllis Rosenblum, co-chair of the 2016 Circle of Friends, along with Angela Herritt. “In a time where we see a lot of posturing and positioning, this man rings so true to a different idea of the meaning of life.”
The Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting community support for literacy and learning and to enhance the development of library services.
“The annual meeting caps off another wonderful year for the Gulfport Library, which has become a center for cultural and literary events for the whole Gulfport community,” said Rosenblum. “The fact that so many people attended the annual meeting says a lot about our Circle, its members and our little city. The Friends have been proud supporters of the many special events as well as the many ongoing programs for the past year.”
