Flying High on the Beach

November 10, 2015 by Helen J. Simon

Will Smoot of Waynesboro, VA, puts away one of his kites Saturday at the Veterans Day kite festival in Treasure Island. Smoot, the DJ for the event, brought three kites to the festival, although he has others.  “That’s all I could fit in the truck with everything else I brought,” he said. This kite has a tail-less diamond shape developed in the 1890s.

The Veterans Day Fall Fly kite festival was held November 7 and 8 on the beach at Treasure Island. The event featured kite flying, games, stunt-kite lessons and demonstrations, as well as candy-drops for the children. Some of the kites had military themes to honor the nation’s veterans.
