Although a smaller-than-usual crowd filled the Boca Ciega Yacht Club for the annual FunDay celebration Saturday, May 10, the club still says they count the day as a success.
Sailors offered sailboat rides to over 100 people and members served over 500 hot dogs, according to one of the event organizers, Jean Proach.
Don Rogers and his wife Jennifer sailed across the bay through the rain to donate his boat and services for the annual event. Every spring, the Yacht Club opens its doors to the community and hosts a FunDay. Members offer free sails of Boca Ciega Bay and the club has door prizes, hot dogs, and information about sailing lessons, Sea Scouting and joining the club.
This year, the club also offered space to groups like the Gulfport Neighbors, the Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and the Gulfport Police.
Although the event took place on a rainy afternoon Proach says that didn’t stop people from coming to the annual party.
“Most of the ones who wanted to come, did come,” Proach says. “We had a lot less attendance than normal, but we did have 200 people.”
