Gulfport City Council unanimously approved a $40,322.70 change order July 21 to add a required fire-suppression system to the Casino dock replacement project.
The new system will add a water connection and piping along the pier so firefighters can access a dedicated supply during an emergency. The original dock project contract did not include the fire-suppression work.
City staff said adding the system during the current construction phase will help keep the project on schedule and avoid potential delays or disruptions that could occur if the installation were completed separately later.

That’s not all that happened at the July 21 Gulfport City Council meeting. Read about the Lions Club demolition, new welcome sign, planning support, proposed tax rate, utility billing system, Veterans Park Shoreline Restoration Project, and what we overheard.
KM2H LLC, Gulfport’s current dock contractor, will coordinate the installation through properly certified personnel. The system must meet applicable fire code requirements.
“Very candidly, we didn’t want the dock builder building a fire-suppression system,” City Manager Jim O’Reilly said.
The Casino Dock Replacement Project’s capital account will cover the $40,322.70 expense.
The Gulfport City Council’s next meeting is Aug. 4 at 6 p.m.
