Want to get involved in history? The Gulfport Historical Society has five board positions up for election this April. Board members each oversee one area of the Society: fundraising, research, curation, education, and events. Fear not, prospective board members: you will work with volunteers to fulfill your chosen area’s responsibilities.
The board members chairing the following committees will have the following responsibilities:
Fundraising: raising money; research: supervision and use of historical records, and conducting and assisting with historical research; curating: maintaining the Society’s collection; educational programming: implementing educational programs as they relate to Gulfport’s history; and events: organizing and managing all aspects of all Society events.
Board members must live inside Gulfport city limits and be Gulfport Historical Society members. The board meets monthly, except for summer months, and asks that board members attend many of the Society’s events. Board members Cathy Salustri and Marie Gsell are both up for re-election; three other seats are vacant.
All paid members in good standing may vote on the four board memberships at the April 7 meeting and bring-a-dish-to-share dinner event. The meeting starts at 6 and voting starts at 7.
To vote in the general election, you must be a member in good standing as of the March 21 porch party. Porch parties are a great time to become a member, but you can also join online at GulfportHistoricalSociety.org.
Please consider giving of yourself to help preserve Gulfport’s past and present for future generations. The Society has taken on new life over the past year and welcomes new blood. If you wish to put your name in the proverbial hat for one of these positions, please e-mail Miki Vaughan at Mikivaughan@aol.com. For more information, please call Miki Vaughan at 321-5705 or Cathy Salustri at 656-5420.
