As part of the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, locals will hit the streets across Gulfport to do everything from coach kids at baseball to clean litter from streets.
On Saturday, January 17, teams of volunteers will participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, sponsored by the Gulfport Neighbors and the city of Gulfport. The Day of Service starts at 8:30 a.m. in Tomlinson Lake Park (5492 Tangerine Ave. S.), where Mayor Sam Henderson will preside over the opening ceremony and Ward Three Councilwoman Yolanda Roman will speak about Dr. King’s ties to volunteerism.
Mayor Henderson will then lead “The Green Team” alongside Roman and the Gulfport Neighbors as they clean the Tangerine Greenway and surrounding areas.
Other teams include a Little League baseball clinic, led by Gulfport Little League alumni (and Gulfport’s city manager) Jim O’Reilly; the Gecko Gardeners will toil in the soil at the Gulfport Community Garden; and the Gulfport Police Department (and friends) will serve and greet McDonald’s customers and clean the yard of a local disabled veteran.
Every team still seeks volunteers, and Gulfport Neighbors President Margarete Tober encourages people who want to perform a volunteer service not listed to register their own team and project at the city of Gulfport’s website (mygulfport.us/mlkservice/)
Upon completing their project, each team will return to Tomlinson Lake Park for closing ceremonies and a volunteer appreciation picnic. As their Day of Service project, the Royal Blues Band will play from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
