Heroin Overdose at the Casino
A 46-year-old man who was found unconscious on the floor of a Gulfport Casino bathroom after overdosing on heroin was resuscitated by Gulfport Police, officials said Wednesday, October 5.
Robert Brown, 46, was discovered not breathing around 11 p.m. on Sept. 28, according to Sgt. Thomas Woodman. The responding officer, Scott Hutsko, performed CPR until rescue personnel arrived and determined the man overdosed on heroin. They administered Narcan to reverse the effects of the drug.
“Once Brown could speak, he informed them he snorted heroin,” Woodman said via email. “Rescue stated that they had been out with Brown approximately three hours earlier with chest pains and he refused to be treated.”
No drugs were found and no charges were filed against Brown, who is living with a relative at 5214 27th Ave. S., Woodman said.
Asked whether heroin overdoses are common in Gulfport, Woodman said: “It has occurred but I wouldn’t say often. …The increased use of heroin is a trend all over since the crackdown on prescription pills.”
St. Petersburg Motorcyclist Killed in Gulfport Accident
A 24-year-old St. Petersburg woman died when the motorcycle she was driving and a sports utility vehicle collided on 49th Street South and Jersey Avenue in Gulfport last week.
According the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Armaletha M. Wesley was operating her 2015 Leike motorcycle southbound in the median on 49th Street South at 8:30 a.m. September 30 when 51-year-old Ronald Hillman of Gulfport “made a northbound turn onto 49th Street pulling out in front of the motorcyclist.” Wesley, a resident of 3925 Mohr Ave. N., was not wearing a helmet and died while en route to the hospital, according to investigators. Hillman, 51, who was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, was not injured.
Investigators said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. The investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
