At 1:49 a.m. on June 9, a St. Petersburg police officer was stopped at the intersection of 15th Ave. S. and 22nd Street, facing northbound. He observed a vehicle traveling westbound on 22 Ave. S. As this vehicle approached the intersection, it accelerated and turned directly at the officer. The officer had to take evasive action to avoid impact. A pursuit was authorized.
During the pursuit, the officer crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of 22nd St. S. and 22nd Ave. S. The officer was not injured.
Officers deployed stop sticks at the intersection of 22nd Ave. S. and 31st Street and in the 700 block of 40th St. S. The vehicle being pursued ran over the stop sticks, as did a police cruiser. The police cruiser had a flat tire. The suspect vehicle traveled until the tires came off the rims and it eventually came to a stop in the parking lot of the shopping center located at 1940 49th St. S.
