Police Collect Pounds of Pills

Gulfport Police Department participated Saturday, September 26, in a Pinellas County-wide effort for citizens to safely discard unused or expired prescription medications.The program is aimed at addressing the problem of prescription drug abuse and keeping a clean environment. Operation Medicine Cabinet events began in May 2009 and have been held semi-annually since then.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s office teamed up with the Live Free! Substance Abuse Prevention Coilition of Pinellas County as well as several law enforcement agencies in Pinellas County.

The Gulfport Police Department set up a drop-off location at the Gulfport Senior Center on Saturday where they collected nine pounds of prescription drugs. 

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s office reported a total of 937 pounds of medication collected throughout the county on Saturday. 

The Sheriff’s office collected 90 pounds while Clearwater Police Department collected 662 pounds.
