Judy Covrett poses with some funeral home no-parking signs for sale Saturday, November 12 during Gulfport’s city-wide yard sale. Covrett was helping signs owner Vicki Puchta, who said they had belonged to her brother-in-law, the owner of five funeral homes in Missouri.
“Someone thought they were plastic for Halloween, but they’re the real McCoy,” Puchta said. “They use cones now,” she added, explaining why the cast-iron signs were obsolete. She said her sister uses antique caskets from the funeral homes for decorations for Halloween, which also happens to be her birthday.
More than 150 households, a record, signed up for the twice-a-year garage sale, said Gulfport Technical Events Specialist Gail Biron. “It’s a great way for people to get rid of a few things they don’t need and get a few extra bucks for their holiday shopping,” Biron said. The next city-wide yard sale is scheduled for March 18, 2017.
