Lightning struck the boat, but thanks to the boaters’ preparedness, the Coast Guard found them – 100 miles off the coast of Clearwater Beach.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded after a 911 call from a motorist on the Skyway Bridge who saw two red flares fired into the early morning sky at 5:25 a.m.
They were hoisted aboard the chopper and transported to the Clearwater air station. Their boat the “Right Stuff” sunk on Valentine’s Day.
On Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a boater who abandoned his distressed boat in favor of his kayak; rescuers credit the boater’s personal locator beacon in finding and saving the man.
