Natalie Slohm of St. Petersburg, right, gets help doing her taxes free of charge from Walter Sowa of St. Pete Beach, a volunteer with AARP Income Tax Assistance on Monday, April 4, at the Gulfport Public Library. Slohm said she had always paid someone to do her taxes, but her friends had recommended the service.
“It sounded like it would be good for me,” she said.
Sowa said doing others’ taxes helps him keep abreast of the constant changes in the tax code.
Said Slohm: “He’s very patient. I can tell you that.”
The tax help is provided by the Internal Revenue Service and AARP and is open to anyone of any age. Tax helpers will be available again Friday April 8 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Monday April 11 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information call 727-893-1073. Volunteers are needed for all positions, including greeting patrons and preparing and reviewing the tax returns. Anyone interested in volunteering can call Mike Noonberg at 727-821-0077.
